Anjajavy Private Nature Reserve, Madagascar

Anjajavy Le Lodge

Anjajavy Le Lodge is a polished, privacy-first base in Anjajavy Private Nature Reserve: design in stone and timber, service that lands lightly, and days tuned to light, weather and appetite....

Anjajavy Le Lodge occupies an exceptionally remote peninsula on Madagascar’s north-west coast, where dry deciduous forest, limestone formations, baobabs, beaches and turquoise water sit within the same protected landscape. It is the sort of property that works as a destination in its own right rather than simply somewhere to sleep between excursions. The lodge is surrounded by the Anjajavy protected area, giving guests immediate access to both terrestrial wildlife and the marine environment while retaining the privacy and sense of space that come with its isolated setting.

The architecture takes its cues from traditional Sakalava building styles and has been designed to sit quietly within the landscape. At the heart of the lodge are the restaurant and terrace, an infinity pool looking towards the sea and the remarkable Oasis garden, a carefully created humid habitat where lush planting, ponds and tree canopy attract frogs, chameleons and lemurs. Beyond the main lodge, paths lead through the forest and towards a series of secluded coves, allowing days to move easily between wildlife, exploration and time by the water.

Villas and accommodation

Anjajavy has 24 villas built predominantly from hardwood and positioned to make the most of the sea views and surrounding vegetation. Each villa includes a ground-floor bedroom and lounge area together with an 18 square metre covered terrace. Some configurations also have a mezzanine reached by a traditional Japanese-style staircase, with two single beds that can be useful for children, another guest or simply additional private space.

The bathrooms were fully refurbished in 2024 and include a large walk-in glass shower, twin basins and a separate WC. Individual air conditioning is provided in every villa. Eight villas occupy particularly private premium positions facing the sea with direct beach access and no passing foot traffic, making these especially appealing for couples and guests who value seclusion.

Dining at Anjajavy

Dining is part of the experience rather than an afterthought. The restaurant terrace looks across the grounds towards the sea and gives the kitchen a naturally atmospheric setting for meals. The lodge’s isolation encourages guests to settle into the rhythm of the property, with food, drinks and the day’s activities arranged around the landscape rather than constant movement between venues.

Private and romantic dining can also form part of a stay, particularly for honeymooners or celebrations. Private Hideaway Escapes can discuss the current dining arrangements and inclusions when preparing an itinerary, as these can vary by package and season.

Wildlife, forest and marine experiences

One of Anjajavy’s great strengths is the variety available without having to leave the wider reserve. Guided exploration can reveal lemurs, chameleons, endemic birds, unusual plants and the distinctive dry forest ecosystem. The limestone tsingy and giant baobabs add another dimension to walks, while the coast introduces beaches, mangroves and marine life.

The lodge’s five private coves are reached by trails through the surrounding landscape and provide quieter places for swimming and relaxing. Snorkelling opens up the marine environment, while longer excursions can explore the extraordinary Bay of Moramba, where limestone islets rise from the sea and ancient baobabs grow on small offshore formations. The bay is also an important area for wildlife, including the rare Madagascar fish eagle.

Wellness and slower days

Anjajavy is equally well suited to guests who do not want every day programmed. The infinity pool, beaches, private terraces and Oasis garden provide plenty of reasons to remain close to the lodge. Massages and body treatments using local essential oils can be arranged either at the massage villa or on a guest’s own villa terrace, creating a particularly private approach to wellness.

Good to know

Anjajavy’s remoteness is fundamental to its appeal, so the journey should be planned as part of the experience rather than treated like an ordinary hotel transfer. It combines especially well with another contrasting Madagascan region, allowing guests to experience very different ecosystems within one itinerary. For travellers who want wildlife, beach time and privacy without repeatedly changing hotels, it can also justify a longer stay.

Why stay at Anjajavy Le Lodge?

Anjajavy is compelling because so much of Madagascar can be experienced from one base. Forest wildlife, baobabs, tsingy, beaches, coves and the sea are all part of the same stay, while the limited number of villas keeps the atmosphere intimate. Private Hideaway Escapes can incorporate Anjajavy into a tailor-made Madagascar journey, arranging the most appropriate routing, transfers and complementary properties around the way you prefer to travel.
