A landmark lodge built into the rocks of Meru
Elsa’s Kopje is set on Mughwango Hill in Meru National Park, with cottages and suites built into and around the natural granite outcrops. The elevated position opens wide views across a park that feels markedly wilder and less visited than Kenya’s more famous safari regions.
The lodge takes its name from Elsa the lioness and the conservation story associated with George and Joy Adamson, whose work helped place Meru on the safari map.
Accommodation
Individual cottages are spread along the hillside to maximise privacy and views. The architecture uses stone, timber and thatch to work with the contours of the kopje rather than imposing a conventional lodge plan.
There are options suited to couples and families, including larger suites and private-house style accommodation. Some upper categories include private pools, making them particularly appealing for longer stays.
Meru National Park
Meru is a superb choice for travellers who want a quieter safari. Rivers, doum palms, open plains and woodland support elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and a wide variety of antelope and birdlife. Vehicle traffic is generally much lighter than in the Mara.
Safari and downtime
Game drives are complemented by guided walks and other activities depending on conditions and current park arrangements. Back at the lodge, the main swimming pool and elevated viewpoints make the most of the vast landscape.

Why we like it
Meru feels different from the Mara, and Elsa’s Kopje makes the most of that difference. The landscape is broader, the pace quieter and the lodge’s rocky architecture has a genuine relationship with its setting.
Private Hideaway Escapes can combine Elsa’s Kopje with the Mara, Laikipia or the Kenyan coast for a more varied safari.
