Isalo National Park, Madagascar

Le Jardin du Roy

Le Jardin du Roy is a polished, privacy-first base in Isalo National Park: design in stone and timber, service that lands lightly, and days tuned to light, weather and appetite....

Le Jardin du Roy sits on the edge of Isalo National Park in south-west Madagascar, surrounded by the sandstone scenery that gives this part of the country such a distinctive character. Rather than competing with the landscape, the hotel draws directly from it: steep roofs echo the surrounding rock forms, hand-cut granite reflects the colours of the massif and local materials including rosewood, marble and labradorite reinforce its Madagascan identity.

The result is a property that feels closely connected to Isalo while still providing the comforts needed after long days on foot. Landscaped grounds, a gallery forest and the small Soarano River soften the rugged setting, while the pool and terraces create easy places to slow down between excursions.

Rooms in the Isalo landscape

Le Jardin du Roy has 40 rooms distributed across eight bungalows. The accommodation is divided into 16 double rooms, 16 triple rooms and eight family rooms, making the hotel workable for couples as well as families and small groups. Rooms are spacious and look across the gardens and gallery forest, with bathrooms featuring either a bath or walk-in shower.

The accommodation is designed as a comfortable retreat rather than a highly urban luxury hotel. The setting remains the main event, and the low-rise bungalow arrangement helps the property retain a sense of space and connection to the surrounding landscape.

Dining from Madagascar and beyond

The restaurant combines European and Malagasy influences. Fresh seasonal vegetables from the property’s organic farm are used alongside regional ingredients including Bara zebu, seafood and other produce. This makes dining a useful continuation of the destination rather than an entirely internationalised hotel experience.

After a day in Isalo, the ability to return to a proper restaurant, bar and comfortable grounds is one of the hotel’s strengths. The pool and relaxation areas also give guests options when they want to spend part of the day at the property rather than continuously exploring.

Exploring Isalo National Park

Isalo is known for deeply eroded sandstone formations, canyons, natural pools and landscapes that can feel dramatically different from Madagascar’s rainforests and tropical islands. Walking is central to the experience, and a stay at Le Jardin du Roy is best treated as an opportunity to devote real time to the park rather than simply pass through for a night.

The hotel also offers experiences within the wider Isalo Nature estate. Horse riding can range from shorter outings to half-day and full-day excursions through the surrounding scenery. For more adventurous guests, a guided via ferrata follows the ridges of the massif using a secured cable system and supplied safety equipment. The route is designed for beginners upwards, subject to the operator’s age and safety requirements.

Wellness and time at the hotel

Not every day needs to be strenuous. The hotel’s gardens, swimming pool and massage options make it possible to balance hiking with genuine downtime. This is particularly valuable on a longer Madagascar itinerary, where road journeys and early starts can otherwise make the trip feel relentless.

Good to know

Le Jardin du Roy has its own 1,000 metre grass airstrip, officially registered for light aircraft, which can be relevant when designing a higher-end itinerary that avoids some of Madagascar’s long road sectors. Flight operation is always subject to aircraft, weather and current aviation arrangements, so this needs to be planned in advance rather than assumed.

The property is particularly rewarding when enough time is allowed for both Isalo National Park and the hotel’s own surroundings. A rushed overnight stay misses much of what makes this region worthwhile.

Why stay at Le Jardin du Roy?

Le Jardin du Roy provides a comfortable and characterful base in one of Madagascar’s most visually dramatic regions. It is not simply a gateway to the national park: its architecture, gardens, food and estate activities make it part of the Isalo experience. Private Hideaway Escapes can incorporate the property into a wider Madagascar itinerary and advise on the most appropriate road or air routing according to the rest of the journey.
