Pumalani Lodge, generally styled Pumulani, occupies a hillside on the Nankumba Peninsula at the southern end of Lake Malawi. Villas step down through trees and rocky outcrops towards the water, giving the lodge elevated views across the lake and a strong sense of privacy. It is an excellent place to slow the pace after safari, but there is enough to do on and around the water for guests who prefer active days.
The current operator notes that the beach is temporarily unavailable because of high water levels, an important practical detail when choosing the property. The lake experience itself remains central, with water activities, pools and broad views forming the heart of the stay.
Spacious villas above the lake
Pumulani currently lists nine luxury villas in its key facts, while its detailed property description refers to ten villas. Rather than pretending that discrepancy does not exist, Private Hideaway Escapes will confirm the current inventory when booking. The accommodation includes dedicated family and honeymoon options, with villas designed around generous bedrooms, private decks, lounges and substantial bathrooms.
Air conditioning and ceiling fans are provided, and the family villa is positioned for convenient access to activities. The honeymoon villa is more secluded in the forest and includes an outdoor shower.
Lake Malawi from the water
Kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, waterskiing, snorkelling and diving can all feature during a stay. Lake Malawi is celebrated for its extraordinary diversity of freshwater fish, making time below the surface as interesting as the views across it. Guests can be as active or inactive as they choose, with the lodge able to shift between watersports and long, quiet afternoons.
Walking in the surrounding hills provides a land-based alternative, while a state-of-the-art telescope makes stargazing a distinctive evening activity. The combination of water and night sky gives Pumulani a particularly broad range of experiences for a lake lodge.
Food and time to unwind
The restaurant and main areas sit higher on the hillside, taking advantage of the outlook. Meals and drinks are integrated into the relaxed lodge routine, with the day’s activities arranged around weather and guest preference rather than a safari-style timetable.
Two infinity pools provide additional places to cool off and relax. This is useful while the beach is affected by elevated lake levels and also gives families and less confident swimmers an easy alternative to open-water swimming.

Good to know
There are numerous steps and walkways between the main area, villas and waterfront, so the lodge is less suitable for guests with limited mobility. The operator currently advises that the beach is temporarily unavailable due to high water levels. Pumulani also operates seasonally, so opening dates should be checked before building an itinerary around it.
Why stay at Pumulani Lodge?
Pumulani gives a Malawi itinerary a genuine change of gear. After early safari mornings, the lake introduces swimming, sailing, snorkelling and long views across the water without losing the sense of being somewhere distinctly African. Private Hideaway Escapes can combine it with Majete, South Luangwa or other regional safari areas for an elegant bush-and-lake journey.
