A legendary Aswan hotel entering a new era
The Old Cataract occupies one of Egypt’s great hotel settings, perched above the Nile on a pink granite outcrop opposite Elephantine Island. Its historic palace, grand terraces and river views have made it an Aswan landmark for more than a century.
Important current information: the hotel ceased to be operated by Sofitel after 30 April 2026. Mandarin Oriental assumed management from 1 May 2026 and a phased renovation is now under way. The heritage building continues to welcome guests while the Nile Wing is comprehensively renovated. The full property is scheduled to relaunch as Mandarin Oriental Old Cataract, Aswan in July 2027.
The historic setting
The original palace is the heart of the experience: high ceilings, Moorish detailing, formal public rooms and terraces overlooking the Nile create an atmosphere that is inseparable from Aswan itself. The hotel has hosted royalty, statesmen and writers, and Agatha Christie’s association remains part of its story.
Accommodation during the transformation
Accommodation and facilities are changing during the phased works, so current room inventory should be checked for specific travel dates. Historically, the Palace has included rooms and suites overlooking either the gardens or Nile, including named suites associated with Agatha Christie and Sir Winston Churchill.
We recommend choosing this hotel with current advice rather than relying on older room maps or pre-2026 descriptions.
Dining and the Nile
The hotel’s historic dining spaces include the celebrated 1902 restaurant beneath its Arabian dome, alongside terraces that exploit the extraordinary Nile setting. Dining arrangements may evolve during the renovation programme and should be confirmed at booking.
Exploring Aswan
Aswan is one of Egypt’s most rewarding places to slow the pace. Philae Temple, the Nubian Museum, Elephantine Island and the river itself are all central to a stay, while private felucca journeys reveal the granite islands and desert landscape from the water.
Good to know
The transition to Mandarin Oriental is significant and ongoing. For travel before the full 2027 relaunch, availability, facilities and the extent of renovation work should be checked carefully. This is precisely the sort of property where current advice matters.

Why we like it
Few hotels are so closely tied to their destination. The Old Cataract’s architecture, history and position above the Nile make it extraordinary, but the current transformation means it should be booked with up-to-date information rather than nostalgia alone.
