the landmark Taj Mahal Palace in Colaba is facing the Gateway of India and Mumbai Harbour. Opened in 1903, it remains one of the city's defining buildings and is as much part of the experience of South Mumbai as many of the monuments clients come to see.
Accommodation
The hotel combines the historic Palace wing with the more modern Tower, creating a wide spread of room styles and views. Current Taj information lists 246 rooms and 12 suites, with Palace categories generally carrying the strongest sense of history and many Tower rooms offering excellent harbour outlooks. Butler service is available in selected categories and the public spaces retain the scale and ceremony expected of a grand hotel.
Dining, wellness and time at the property
Dining is extensive, ranging across Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Middle Eastern and international restaurants, with Sea Lounge a classic setting for tea and harbour views. J Wellness Circle and the Ayurveda Sanctuary provide Indian and international treatments, and there is a pool and fitness facilities within the hotel complex.
Choosing Palace or Tower
The two wings offer different experiences. Clients primarily drawn by history and atmosphere will usually prefer a Palace room, while Tower categories can provide a more contemporary layout and excellent harbour views. We select by room and outlook rather than assuming one wing is automatically right for everyone.
How it fits into a Private Hideaway Escapes itinerary
The location is exceptional for walking into Colaba and exploring the Gateway, Kala Ghoda, museums and the historic Fort district. We normally recommend two or three nights, either as an introduction to India or before an international flight home. For clients who enjoy heritage and a genuine sense of place, the Palace wing is usually worth prioritising over simply choosing the lowest room category.
