Torfhus Retreat reinterprets Iceland’s traditional turf-roofed buildings as a small luxury base in the Golden Circle. Low timber houses sit in open volcanic countryside with views towards mountains and the Langjokull glacier, giving guests a strong sense of landscape while retaining the warmth and comfort needed for Iceland’s changeable weather.

Accommodation

Accommodation includes one-bedroom Torfbaer suites for two, arranged in groups with a shared geothermal basalt-stone hot pool, and larger two-bedroom Torfhus houses for up to four with private facilities. A separate four-bedroom Torfvilla sleeps up to eight and adds its own geothermal hot pool, cold plunge, sauna, full kitchen and the option of private in-villa dining with a chef.

Dining, wellness and time at the property

The retreat is well placed for the Golden Circle but is most rewarding when the itinerary goes beyond ticking off headline sights. Private guiding can incorporate waterfalls, geothermal landscapes, riding, highland routes and seasonal northern-lights searching. Returning to a hot pool after a winter day outside is an important part of the experience rather than simply another hotel amenity.

Golden Circle logistics

The advantage of sleeping in the region is the ability to visit major sights outside the busiest day-trip windows and to add lesser-known stops. In winter we keep plans flexible around road and weather conditions; in summer, long daylight makes later exploration possible.

How it fits into a Private Hideaway Escapes itinerary

Two or three nights works well before continuing to the south coast or Reykjavik. In winter, road and weather conditions need to be built into the plan rather than treated as an inconvenience, while summer brings very long daylight hours. Torfhus particularly suits independent-minded travellers who prefer small-scale accommodation and privacy to the facilities of a conventional resort.
