Umaid Bhawan Palace stands above Jodhpur in 26 acres of gardens, a monumental Art Deco palace that remains partly a royal residence. Built from golden sandstone and crowned by a vast central dome, it offers a very different expression of Rajasthan from the older forts and havelis in the Blue City below.

Taj currently lists 71 rooms and suites – 26 rooms and 45 suites – with views across gardens, the city, pool or Mehrangarh Fort. Interiors combine period furniture, Art Deco geometry and royal memorabilia. Butler service and the sheer scale of the public rooms make the experience deliberately ceremonial, but the gardens and pool also give guests space to retreat from sightseeing.
Dining, wellness and time at the property
Risala serves Indian and Rajasthani dishes inspired by royal kitchens, Pillars is an open-air colonnaded cafe with city and garden views, and Trophy Bar uses sporting and hunting memorabilia to create a more informal evening setting. J Wellness Circle, indoor and outdoor pools, fitness and yoga broaden the hotel beyond its heritage appeal.
Jodhpur and the palace
Mehrangarh Fort is one of Rajasthan’s great sights, and the old city below it rewards time on foot with a private guide. We also like to include craft or textile visits where appropriate, then return to Umaid Bhawan for the late afternoon when the sandstone changes colour in the softer light.
How it fits into a Private Hideaway Escapes itinerary
The palace is around 15 minutes from Jodhpur Airport and works particularly well for two or three nights. Private touring can cover Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, the old city and local craft workshops, with the hotel itself reserved for slower afternoons. It is a natural link between Jaipur and Udaipur or as part of a longer route through rural Rajasthan.
