Andasibe is one of Madagascar’s essential wildlife regions, protecting eastern rainforest within practical reach of Antananarivo. Its best-known resident is the indri, the largest living lemur, whose extraordinary territorial calls carry through the forest in the early morning.
Rainforest on foot
Guided walks are the core experience. Trails reveal lemurs, chameleons, frogs, birds, orchids and other endemic species, with skilled local guides often noticing wildlife that would otherwise remain invisible. Night walks add nocturnal species and an entirely different atmosphere.
More than one protected area
The wider Andasibe region includes several forest areas and reserves, allowing itineraries to vary according to wildlife interests and walking ability. Rain is part of the ecosystem and should be expected even outside the wettest months.
Why Andasibe works so well
Its accessibility makes Andasibe an excellent introduction to Madagascar’s biodiversity, but the quality of the forest experience means it should not be treated merely as a convenient first stop.
