The Barossa Valley lies north-east of Adelaide and is one of Australia’s most recognised wine regions. Generations of grape growing, historic towns and a strong food culture have created a destination that rewards far more than a quick tasting tour.
Wine with history
The region is particularly associated with Shiraz, including wines from very old vines, but its producers work across a broad range of varieties and styles. Private tastings can be tailored around established estates, small producers or particular wine interests.
Food and local produce
Restaurants, farm shops, bakeries and artisan producers make food an equally important part of a Barossa stay. Long lunches and carefully paced tastings are preferable to attempting a long checklist of cellar doors.
Stay rather than day trip
Although the Barossa is easily reached from Adelaide, several nights allow travellers to enjoy the landscape and hospitality without repeatedly driving back to the city. It can also be combined with the Adelaide Hills and Clare Valley.
