Folegandros sits in the western Cyclades and has resisted the scale of development found on some better-known neighbours. Its Hora occupies a plateau high above the Aegean, where whitewashed lanes, small squares and the medieval Kastro create one of the island group’s most atmospheric settlements.
Beyond the first impression
The landscape is dry, rugged and crossed by old paths between chapels, terraces and villages. Beaches are generally simple and naturally beautiful, with some reached most easily on foot or by boat. The Church of Panagia above Hora provides a memorable sunset viewpoint.
Days shaped around the destination
Folegandros suits travellers who are content with a smaller choice of restaurants and nightlife in exchange for intimacy and a strong sense of place. It is particularly appealing outside the busiest weeks of summer.
Planning a longer stay
The island pairs naturally with Milos, Santorini or other Cyclades stops. Three or four nights allow its deliberately unhurried character to become the point rather than a limitation.
