Gaafu Alifu forms part of the vast Huvadhu Atoll system in the southern Maldives. The journey south is longer than to the central atolls, but that distance is precisely what gives the region its appeal: resort islands sit amid an enormous expanse of reef and open ocean.
Landscape and atmosphere
Divers are drawn by channels, reef walls and the possibility of larger marine life, while snorkellers can enjoy healthy reef environments depending on the chosen island. Surf and fishing may also feature at selected resorts and seasons.
Experiences worth making time for
Resort choice should reflect the traveller’s priorities because there is no casual movement between islands. A strong house reef, excellent dining and enough variety for the length of stay are particularly important.
Where it works best
Gaafu Alifu is best for guests who actively want remoteness rather than simply the shortest transfer. For longer Maldives stays, the extra journey can be rewarded by a noticeably more secluded atmosphere.
