Ifotaka Commiunity Forest, retaining the WordPress spelling used by the collection, lies in Madagascar’s far south within a striking landscape of spiny forest and dry river country. This ecosystem is radically different from the island’s eastern rainforests and supports plants and animals adapted to an arid environment.
The spiny forest
Octopus trees, euphorbias and other unusual vegetation create an almost otherworldly setting for guided walks. Lemurs, birds and reptiles add wildlife interest, while nocturnal excursions can reveal species rarely encountered during the day.
Landscape and community
The wider region is home to Antandroy communities whose traditions and relationship with this demanding environment form an important part of the destination. Cultural encounters are most valuable when locally led and approached with sensitivity.
A contrasting Madagascar experience
Ifotaka is particularly rewarding within a multi-region itinerary. Following rainforest, highland or coastal travel, the dry south demonstrates just how dramatically Madagascar’s habitats can change over relatively short distances.
