Ile Sainte Marie, or Nosy Boraha, lies just off Madagascar’s east coast and has a softer, greener character than many of the country’s western islands. Coconut palms, quiet beaches, fishing villages and a strong maritime history shape an island that feels relaxed rather than heavily resorted.
Whales and the Indian Ocean
Humpback whales migrate through the waters around Sainte Marie seasonally, making responsible whale-watching one of the island’s signature experiences at the appropriate time of year. Outside whale season, boating, snorkelling and beach days keep the focus firmly on the ocean.
Exploring the island
The island’s history includes trade, piracy and colonial settlement, traces of which remain around its small towns and cemeteries. Cycling and local excursions are rewarding ways to see more than the beach and encounter everyday island life.
A relaxed end to Madagascar
Sainte Marie is particularly appealing after rainforest or overland travel. Its scale encourages exploration while still allowing several days to do very little at all.
