Kathmandu is not a polished city in the conventional sense, but its layers of Hindu and Buddhist culture are extraordinary. Historic squares, shrines and courtyards sit within busy modern neighbourhoods, while major sacred sites across the valley remain active centres of worship.
Why spend time here
Private guiding is essential for context. Durbar squares, Buddhist stupas and Hindu temple complexes become far more meaningful when their architecture, rituals and restoration histories are explained rather than simply photographed.
Exploring at the right pace
The wider Kathmandu Valley also contains historic cities and hill settlements, allowing travellers to balance the capital’s intensity with quieter cultural days. Good hotels provide welcome calm, gardens and views between excursions.
Building it into an itinerary
Kathmandu is the principal gateway for Himalayan journeys, but deserves at least two or three nights of its own. It combines naturally with Dhulikhel, Pokhara, Bhutan or trekking itineraries depending on the wider journey.
