Lake Kivu stretches along Rwanda’s western border beneath steep green hills, creating one of the country’s most relaxing landscapes. Its broad waters and indented shoreline provide a natural change of pace after trekking or safari.
Life beside the lake
Lakeside stays centre on views, swimming where appropriate, kayaking, boat trips and quiet time on the shore. Towns including Rubavu and Karongi provide different bases, while islands and rural communities add interest away from the main waterfronts.
Active exploration
The Congo Nile Trail follows sections of the lake through hilly countryside and can be experienced on foot or by bicycle in selected stages. Coffee-growing landscapes and village visits provide further context.
A natural itinerary link
Lake Kivu sits particularly well between Volcanoes National Park and destinations further south. Rather than adding another intense activity, it gives a Rwanda journey breathing space while retaining a strong sense of place.
