Lake Tekapo lies in the high Mackenzie Basin, where glacial flour gives the water its distinctive turquoise colour and the Southern Alps rise along the western horizon.
Dark skies and alpine light
The region sits within an internationally recognised dark-sky area, making stargazing a major attraction. By day, walking, cycling and scenic flights reveal the scale of the basin and surrounding mountains.
Linking the South Island
Tekapo fits naturally between Christchurch and Aoraki Mount Cook or Queenstown. An overnight stay is particularly worthwhile because the night sky and early-morning light are fundamental parts of the experience.
