Madikwe lies in South Africa’s North West Province close to the Botswana border. Once heavily altered by farming, the reserve was repopulated through one of the country’s largest wildlife reintroduction programmes and now supports a broad range of species across varied bushveld.
Big Five safari without malaria risk
Elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard occur in the reserve alongside cheetah, African wild dog and numerous antelope. Game drives are the main activity, with private lodge concessions helping manage the viewing experience.
A strong choice for families
Madikwe’s malaria-free status, subject to individual medical advice, makes it particularly attractive to families. Several lodges are designed around younger travellers without reducing the quality of guiding for adults.
Easy to combine
Road and air access from Johannesburg make Madikwe practical within a broader South African itinerary. It is especially useful when travellers want a serious safari without adding complex internal travel.
