NamibRand Nature Reserve protects a huge sweep of privately conserved desert on the eastern edge of the Namib. Red dunes, pale grasslands, gravel plains and isolated mountain ranges combine into a landscape whose scale is difficult to grasp until you are inside it.
Space and silence
Wildlife is adapted to arid conditions and may include oryx, springbok, zebra and smaller desert species, but NamibRand’s greatest luxury is space. Carefully controlled tourism and low accommodation density preserve a powerful sense of isolation.
Dark skies
The reserve is internationally recognised for the quality of its night sky. With almost no artificial light, stars and the Milky Way become a genuine part of the experience rather than simply an evening backdrop.
Exploring the desert
Nature drives, guided walks and scenic flights reveal different scales of the landscape. NamibRand pairs naturally with Sossusvlei, but staying within the reserve allows time to experience the desert beyond its most famous landmark.
