Nyerere National Park protects an immense tract of southern Tanzania, with the Rufiji River and its channels, lakes and floodplains forming the focus of much safari activity. The scale of the landscape and relatively low visitor density give the region a strong wilderness character.
Safari by land and water
Game drives reveal woodland, open areas and riverine habitats, while boat safaris provide a completely different perspective on hippo, crocodile, birdlife and animals approaching the water. Guided walking may also be available from selected camps.
Wild southern Tanzania
Elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe, antelope and African wild dog are among the species associated with the wider ecosystem. Sightings can require patience across such a large landscape, making good guiding particularly important.
Why choose Nyerere?
The park suits travellers wanting a less conventional Tanzania safari or a second visit beyond the northern circuit. Light-aircraft connections also make it practical to combine with Ruaha and the Indian Ocean.
