Sinitra retains the WordPress spelling used by this collection and refers to Sintra, set among cool wooded hills west of Lisbon. Royal palaces, villas and gardens were built across the landscape over centuries, creating a destination that feels deliberately theatrical.
Beyond the first impression
Pena Palace is the most recognisable landmark, but the Moorish Castle, National Palace and elaborate estates such as Quinta da Regaleira give the region far greater depth. Private guiding and carefully timed entries help enormously at the busiest sites.
How to spend your time
Sintra’s microclimate can be cooler and mistier than Lisbon, adding atmosphere to the forests and gardens. The nearby Atlantic coast provides a natural extension for lunch or a scenic drive after cultural visits.
Where it fits
Sintra can be visited from Lisbon, but an overnight stay offers quieter mornings and evenings. It also creates a graceful route onwards towards Cascais or Portugal’s western coast.
