Sossusvlei lies deep within the Namib, surrounded by some of the world’s highest and most photogenic sand dunes. Red and orange ridges rise above white clay pans, with isolated camel-thorn trees creating the stark compositions for which the region is famous.
Sossusvlei and Deadvlei
Early morning is particularly rewarding, when low light creates deep shadows across the dunes and temperatures remain manageable. Deadvlei’s dark, long-dead trees stand against a pale pan and red dunes, forming one of Namibia’s most recognisable landscapes.
Sesriem Canyon
Closer to the park entrance, the Tsauchab River has carved Sesriem Canyon into layers of sedimentary rock. Walking within it provides a useful change of scale after the immense openness of the dunes.
Allow time for the desert
Sossusvlei deserves more than a rushed dawn visit. Scenic flights, nature drives and time at a desert lodge reveal how much more there is to the Namib than a single famous pan.
