Te Anau & Manapouri sit on the eastern edge of Fiordland National Park, one of New Zealand’s great wilderness regions. Their lakeside settings make them natural bases for exploring deep fiords, rainforest and alpine valleys.
Into Fiordland
Milford Sound can be reached by one of the country’s most scenic roads, while Doubtful Sound is typically approached across Lake Manapouri and Wilmot Pass. Both reward thoughtful timing and smaller-scale cruising.
Stay close to the wilderness
Te Anau also provides access to major walking routes. Spending several nights locally avoids turning Fiordland into an exhausting day trip from Queenstown.
