The Vilanculos coastline is the mainland gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago and a destination in its own right. Looking east across the Mozambique Channel, sandy beaches and shallow turquoise water lead towards protected islands and reefs offshore.
Gateway to Bazaruto
Boat and dhow excursions make it easy to explore the archipelago, with snorkelling, diving, fishing and marine wildlife among the principal attractions. The protected waters are internationally important for species including turtles, dolphins and dugongs.
Mainland space
Staying on the coast offers a different experience from an island resort. Large private properties can provide exceptional space and privacy while retaining access to Vilanculos airport and the town’s services.
Building a Mozambique stay
The region can work as a beach destination on its own or as a staging point for time in the islands. It is also particularly effective as a post-safari extension from neighbouring southern African countries.
