Volcanoes National Park lies in Rwanda’s north-west on the forested slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. The landscape of bamboo, montane forest and volcanic peaks is spectacular in its own right, but the park is best known as one of the world’s key habitats for mountain gorillas.
Gorilla trekking
Small groups trek with trained guides and trackers to visit habituated gorilla families. The terrain, altitude and conditions vary, so a reasonable level of fitness and appropriate equipment matter. Time with the gorillas is carefully controlled to protect the animals.
Beyond the gorillas
Golden monkey trekking, forest walks and cultural experiences can justify several nights in the region. The story of mountain gorilla conservation, including the work associated with Dian Fossey, also adds important context.
Planning the experience
Permits and high-quality lodges should be arranged well ahead, particularly during popular travel periods. Volcanoes combines naturally with Kigali, Lake Kivu and Rwanda’s other parks for a broader journey through the country.
