A classic land-and-water safari in Moremi Game Reserve

Camp Moremi sits within one of Botswana’s most celebrated wildlife areas, the Moremi Game Reserve on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta.

Its particular strength is variety. From one camp, guests can explore Moremi by 4×4 and travel out onto the Delta’s lagoons and channels by motorboat.

That makes Camp Moremi an excellent option for travellers who want a broad introduction to Botswana’s safari landscapes without having to choose exclusively between a land-based or water-based camp.

The camp

Completely rebuilt in 2018, Camp Moremi combines the atmosphere of a traditional Botswana safari camp with contemporary accommodation and comfortable communal spaces.

The main area is elevated and connected by boardwalks.

A sunken bar has been built around an established termite mound and ebony tree, while the lounge extends towards a library and private deck. There is also an elevated dining area, outdoor boma, fireplace and secluded swimming pool.

Despite the additional comfort, this remains a relatively intimate camp with accommodation for no more than 24 guests.

Accommodation

Camp Moremi has 11 luxury guest tents and one two-bedroom family tent.

The family accommodation comprises two en-suite bedrooms, making it a practical option for parents travelling with children while preserving the privacy expected from a safari camp of this standard.

The tented format retains a strong connection with the surrounding bush while providing the facilities expected from a modern luxury safari camp.

Game drives

Morning and afternoon game drives explore the varied ecosystems of Moremi Game Reserve.

This is highly productive wildlife country, with habitats ranging from woodland and floodplains to wetlands.

Elephant, lion, leopard and numerous antelope species inhabit the reserve, while the combination of wet and dry environments supports exceptional birdlife.

As always on a genuine safari, specific sightings can never be guaranteed. The attraction of Moremi is the diversity of habitat and the opportunity to encounter wildlife naturally within it.

Explore the Delta by boat

The water experience is what broadens Camp Moremi beyond a conventional vehicle safari.

Motorised boat excursions head into the Xakanaxa Lagoon and surrounding waterways, moving through deeper channels inaccessible to safari vehicles.

From the water, attention shifts towards hippo, aquatic wildlife and the extraordinary birdlife of the Delta. The slower pace also provides time to appreciate the landscape itself rather than moving continually in search of larger animals.

Combining boat safaris with game drives gives guests two distinctly different ways to understand the ecosystem.

Life at camp

Between activities, the swimming pool provides a quiet place to spend the heat of the day, while the library, decks and lounge areas offer numerous places to read or simply watch the surroundings.

Evenings can gather around the outdoor fire or boma before dinner.

The result is sociable without feeling large or resort-like.

Families

Camp Moremi welcomes children from six years old and has dedicated family accommodation.

There are additional considerations surrounding safari activities for younger guests, and private activities may be appropriate or required depending upon children’s ages and the planned itinerary.

Why we like it

Camp Moremi is particularly useful when designing an itinerary because it doesn’t make guests choose between two of Botswana’s defining experiences.

You can spend one safari tracking wildlife by vehicle and the next moving quietly through the waterways of the Okavango Delta.

For a first Botswana safari – or as one part of a more extensive itinerary – that versatility is extremely appealing.
