Moremi Game Reserve occupies a remarkable part of the central and eastern Okavango Delta, where permanent and seasonal wetlands meet grassland, woodland and substantial dry islands. This mixture of habitats makes Moremi one of Botswana’s most productive areas for traditional big-game safari.
A protected heart of the Delta
Established in 1963 following an initiative by the Batawana people, Moremi is the only officially protected game reserve within the Okavango Delta. Its landscapes include the Moremi Tongue and Chief’s Island, with waterways, lagoons, pans and floodplains supporting abundant herbivores, predators and more than 400 recorded bird species.
Safari in Moremi
Game drives are central to the experience, with lion, leopard, African wild dog, elephant, buffalo and numerous antelope among the wildlife that may be encountered. At suitably located camps and when water levels allow, boating and mokoro excursions add another dimension.
Combining Moremi
Moremi is particularly effective when paired with a private Okavango concession. This allows travellers to experience the reserve’s renowned game viewing alongside activities such as night drives or walking that may be available outside reserve boundaries.
