Majete Wildlife Reserve, Malawi

Mkulumadzi

Mkulumadzi is a polished, privacy-first base in Majete Wildlife Reserve: design in stone and timber, service that lands lightly, and days tuned to light, weather and appetite. Expect unhurried outings,...

Mkulumadzi Lodge sits at the confluence of the Shire and Mkulumadzi rivers within Majete Wildlife Reserve, one of Malawi’s most important conservation landscapes. Guests cross a suspended footbridge over the Mkulumadzi River to reach the lodge, immediately establishing the sense of separation and wilderness that defines a stay here.

Majete covers around 70,000 hectares of miombo woodland, river valleys, granite-topped hills and riverine forest. The reserve has become an important example of wildlife restoration in Malawi, and Mkulumadzi provides an intimate base from which to experience it, surrounded by a substantial private concession.

Eight riverfront chalets

The lodge has eight spacious chalets shaded by leadwood and wild mango trees along the Shire River. Each combines a bedroom and lounge with an en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower and private viewing deck. Family accommodation and a honeymoon option are available, allowing the lodge to work for more than just couples.

Evening Breeze cooling is used in the accommodation, while Wi-Fi is available in the main area rather than being the focus of the guest experience. The river remains the dominant presence, with wildlife sounds and changing light giving the rooms a strong connection to the reserve.

Safari in Majete

Game drives explore Majete’s varied habitats in search of elephant, antelope, predators and other wildlife. Walking safaris slow the experience down and allow guides to concentrate on tracks, plants, insects, birds and the smaller details missed from a vehicle. Birding is rewarding along the river and within the woodland.

The lodge’s private-concession setting gives guides flexibility to shape activities around conditions and guest interests. A star-bed experience can also add a memorable night under the open sky for travellers comfortable with a more immersive bush experience.

Between activities

Mkulumadzi has indoor and outdoor dining, a lounge and terrace, bar, viewing deck, infinity pool and a lapa used for evenings around the fire. These spaces make the lodge comfortable enough to enjoy between safari outings rather than simply functioning as a base for drives.

Meals are included within the broader safari rhythm, with early starts balanced by relaxed lunches and evenings back at camp. The river setting gives dining and sundowners an atmosphere quite distinct from Malawi’s lake properties.

Good to know

Mkulumadzi currently operates seasonally and welcomes children of all ages, although the most appropriate safari activities depend on age and safety considerations. Majete has its own airstrip, which can be useful when linking the reserve with Lake Malawi or other safari regions.

Why stay at Mkulumadzi?

Mkulumadzi shows a side of Malawi that can be overlooked when attention focuses solely on the lake. It combines a serious wildlife reserve with an intimate riverside lodge and fits particularly well into an itinerary that later slows down at Pumulani or Likoma Island. Private Hideaway Escapes can coordinate the safari, air and road sectors as one journey rather than treating each property separately.
