Majete Wildlife Reserve

Majete is one of Malawi's great conservation success stories, a restored Big Five reserve where the Shire River, woodland and low visitor numbers create an intimate safari experience.

Majete Wildlife Reserve in southern Malawi has been transformed through long-term conservation and wildlife restoration. Once heavily depleted, it is now a Big Five reserve and one of the country’s most important examples of successful protected-area recovery.

A quieter style of safari

Woodland, riverine habitat and the Shire River support elephant, buffalo, antelope and predators, while visitor numbers remain modest compared with many better-known African reserves. Game drives therefore tend to feel relaxed and uncrowded.

More than game drives

Depending on lodge and conditions, the wider Majete experience can include walking, boating and time spent understanding the reserve’s conservation story. The landscape itself is an important part of the appeal, particularly around the river.

Combining Majete with Lake Malawi

Majete works extremely well within a Malawi itinerary that finishes on the lake. The shift from bush to freshwater beach creates genuine contrast while keeping travel within a relatively compact country.
