A characterful Nairobi hideaway with a new identity
One Forty Eight was created from a private home in the leafy Karen-Langata area of Nairobi, close to the Giraffe Centre and the city’s southern wildlife attractions. Filled with original art and surrounded by mature gardens, it became known for feeling more like an exceptionally stylish home than a conventional city hotel.
Current note: the property is now known as Eden Nairobi.
The house and accommodation
The intimate property has a small collection of individually styled bedrooms spread between the original house and studio-style spaces. Art, books, collected objects and handcrafted furniture are central to the atmosphere, with the gardens bringing birds and occasional small wildlife remarkably close to the city.
It is best approached as a boutique home rather than a facility-heavy hotel: personal service, interesting interiors, good food and a quiet setting are the point.
Location
Karen-Langata is particularly useful at the beginning or end of a Kenyan safari. The Giraffe Centre is close by, while the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Karen Blixen Museum, Nairobi National Park and local galleries and shops can all be incorporated into a day in the city.
Wilson Airport, used for many domestic safari flights, is considerably more convenient from this side of Nairobi than from the northern business districts.
Dining and time at the property
Meals are intimate and house-like rather than formal, with the garden and veranda providing natural places to slow down after a long international flight. The property’s artistic heritage gives the shared spaces far more personality than a typical airport stopover.
