Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

The Highlands

The Highlands is a polished, privacy-first base in Ngorongoro Crater: design in stone and timber, service that lands lightly, and days tuned to light, weather and appetite. Expect unhurried outings,...

The Highlands offers a distinctive stay in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania. The Highlands sits high on the slopes of Olmoti rather than on the busy crater rim, giving guests both access to Ngorongoro and a much stronger sense of the surrounding volcanic highlands.

Accommodation and character

Eight distinctive canvas-and-perspex domed suites, including an interconnected family option and a honeymoon suite with outdoor hot tub. Categories can vary substantially in privacy, outlook, size and family suitability, so the best choice is not automatically the most expensive. We select accommodation around the guests and the way they intend to use the property.

We also look beyond the bedroom. A private deck, pool, river view, central location or strong main lodge can materially change the hours between activities. Current room configurations and inclusions are checked against the actual travel dates before we recommend a particular category.

Eight domes in the highlands

The Highlands has eight canvas-and-perspex domed suites in forest on the slopes of Olmoti. An interconnected family suite caters for adults travelling with children, while the honeymoon suite adds an outdoor hot tub. All suites have en-suite bathrooms, hot running water and showers.

The position opens possibilities beyond a standard Ngorongoro Crater visit. Guests can explore the volcanic highlands, hike towards Empakaai or spend time understanding Maasai life in the conservation area, giving the destination more depth than a single descent into the crater.

Experiences

Experiences can include Ngorongoro Crater safari, Empakaai hiking, Maasai cultural experiences and highland walking. Season, weather, tides, wildlife movements and local schedules can alter what is possible, so we prefer to build flexible days around the strongest opportunities rather than fill every hour simply because an activity exists.

Wildlife encounters can never responsibly be guaranteed. Good guiding, enough time and an understanding of habitat are more valuable than a checklist. The same principle applies to island, cultural and city stays: a few well-chosen experiences generally reveal more than trying to cover everything.

Dining and downtime

Meals and unstructured time are part of the experience. Depending on the property, dining may move between a restaurant, terrace, beach, riverbank, bush setting or private deck. Dietary requirements should be advised before travel, especially at remote camps and islands where supplies require advance planning.

We deliberately leave breathing space. Watching wildlife from camp, swimming, using a spa, exploring independently or simply sitting with the view can be as memorable as another scheduled excursion and prevents a longer itinerary from becoming exhausting.

Good to know

Rates, inclusions, transfers, operating dates and activity schedules can change. We confirm the details for the requested dates, including baggage restrictions, road or boat transfer times, minimum ages, seasonal access and any permits or specialist arrangements required.

Length of stay should reflect the effort involved in reaching the property and the depth of the destination. A city stop may work in one or two nights; a remote safari camp, island or rural lodge often deserves three or more. We plan the overall rhythm so the journey remains varied without feeling rushed.
