Ngorongoro Crater forms the centrepiece of the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania. From the rim, the land falls dramatically to a broad caldera floor containing grassland, woodland, wetlands and a soda lake.
Safari on the crater floor
The enclosed geography supports a high density of resident wildlife, including large herbivores and predators. Descending into the crater at the start of the day is a memorable experience, although its fame means visitor numbers can be significant.
Beyond the crater
The wider conservation area is far larger than the caldera itself and includes highlands, archaeological sites and landscapes used by Maasai pastoralists. Travellers with time can gain a much broader understanding than a single descent provides.
Planning Ngorongoro well
Staying close to the rim can make early access easier, while accommodation further into the highlands offers another perspective. Ngorongoro combines naturally with Serengeti, Lake Manyara and Tarangire.
