Bentota lies on Sri Lanka’s south-west coast where the Bentota River meets the Indian Ocean. Its long beach and established hotels make it one of the country’s easiest places to add several restorative days after a cultural or wildlife itinerary.
Beyond the first impression
The river and lagoon create opportunities for boat trips and watersports, while nearby gardens and coastal communities provide alternatives to remaining at the resort. Galle can be reached for a cultural day, although staying there separately gives the fort more time.
Days shaped around the destination
Sea conditions vary by season, so swimming and water activities should be planned with local advice rather than assumed. A good resort with generous grounds is valuable when the weather encourages a slower day.
Planning a longer stay
Bentota works best as part of a wider Sri Lankan journey, particularly after the Cultural Triangle, tea country or safari. It provides uncomplicated beach time without requiring an additional island flight.
